The Drawing is its Own Reward

Today, drawing crows — well, one crow.

Light field monotypes. Pan pastels. Vine charcoal. Compressed charcoal.

It just felt good.

All of the crow's weight is on the one foot. This, together with the shape of the high wing, is the secret to the pose. The possibilities for what I can have him do next are endless.

A Closer Look:

Above is one day's set of drawings. Started with vine charcoal — so smooth, the textures jumped onto the page. Followed by compressed charcoal for the deepest contrast on the page.

For these light field monotypes, a 4" flat brush, an old scratchy brush, and a color-shaper silicone brush let me push and pull the ink. Multiple transfers from the plate went from heavily inked to a light ghost print.

The day ended with a few still on the drawing table.
